Capture and destruction of methane from municipal landfill, preventing potent greenhouse gas emissions while generating renewable energy.
This landfill gas project captures methane from a large municipal landfill in Gauteng Province. Methane is 25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO₂. The project extracts landfill gas through a network of wells, then either flares it (destroying the methane) or uses it to generate 12 MW of electricity. The project prevents 88,000 tCO₂e annually - equivalent to emissions from the waste of 800,000 people.
