Africa's largest wind farm with 365 turbines generating 310 MW. Displaces fossil fuel generation from Kenya's grid, preventing 310,000 tCO₂e annually. Project provides 20% of Kenya's installed electricity capacity.
Lake Turkana Wind Power is a 310 MW wind farm consisting of 365 Vestas V52-850kW turbines on 90m towers. Located in Loiyangalani District, the site benefits from consistent wind speeds averaging 11 m/s due to funneling effect between Mt. Kenya and Ethiopian highlands. Project required construction of 428km 400kV transmission line to connect to national grid at Suswa. Power Purchase Agreement with Kenya Power (KPLC) provides for 20-year offtake at fixed tariff. Grid integration uses advanced forecasting and SCADA systems. Project displaces primarily diesel and heavy fuel oil generation with emission factor 0.85 tCO₂/MWh. Annual generation: 1,600 GWh/year achieving 59% capacity factor. Environmental monitoring includes bird migration studies and community benefit-sharing provides road infrastructure and water wells.
