Restoration and protection of coastal mangrove ecosystems, sequestering carbon while providing critical coastal protection and fisheries habitat.
This blue carbon project restores and protects 28,500 hectares of mangrove forest in East Kalimantan. Mangroves sequester carbon at rates up to 5 times higher than terrestrial forests. The project prevents conversion to aquaculture ponds while restoring degraded areas through community-led replanting. The mangroves provide critical ecosystem services including coastal storm protection, nursery habitat for commercial fish species, and water filtration.
