Restoration of degraded tropical peatland through rewetting and fire prevention, protecting massive carbon stores while supporting local livelihoods.
This peatland restoration project in Central Kalimantan rewets 147,000 hectares of drained tropical peat forest. Tropical peatlands store enormous amounts of carbon - when drained and burned, they become major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The project blocks drainage canals, raises water tables, and prevents fires while developing sustainable paludiculture (wet agriculture) alternatives for local communities.
