Protection of threatened savanna grasslands from agricultural conversion, preserving unique ecosystems and carbon stocks in native grassland soils.
This grassland conservation project protects 380,000 hectares of native savanna (known locally as llanos) from conversion to intensive cattle ranching and agriculture. Colombian savannas store significant carbon in deep grassland soils. The project maintains traditional extensive livestock management while preventing agricultural intensification. The area supports unique wildlife including giant anteaters, capybaras, and over 300 bird species.
